A woman decides to clean-up and reorganize the files in her computer comes across a folder she doesn’t recognize – and stumbles upon nearly two years’ worth of emails written by her four-year-old Golden Retriever, Shilo, to her sister’s Bichon Frise, Max!

Shilo discusses everything with Max – the discomfort of a new leash (the e-mail’s subject line:  “torture time”), the perplexing appearance of a Christmas tree in the house (“I’m a normal male dog and we both know the true purpose of a tree. This is too much. If you have an answer to this, I’m all ears,” Shilo writes), and how to convince the family cat that Shilo does not want to eat him, ("...though he would make a tasty Hors d'œuvre ...kidding!") In emails dated Sept. 11 and Sept. 12, 2001, Shilo writes about the sadness he detects in the humans around him, at home and even at the doggy park, a normally happy place for people.

There are even pictures attached to some of the emails further illustrating his adventures and misadventures. Many pictures and emails are about Sammy, the wise old basset hound next door. Sammy is an expert in wolf folklore and canine psychology who becomes Shilo’s mentor, helping him to understand the deeper motivations behind Shilo’s sometimes bad behavior around his human family, and how and why he must overcome it.
